“Everything is affected by and is part of everything else, changing constantly from one state to another. The rain becomes the river; the river surrenders to the sea and the cycle begins all over again. Nothing is ever lost. The melody changes – the dance goes on.” –Connie Harrison

I made it!

Around this time last year, I was researching GMAT prep courses and MBA programs. In April, I went on hiatus and cracked open my GMAT books for the first time (flashback to post). That was the beginning of the first of many long roads. In May, June, July, and August, I wanted to kill the GMAT (flashback to post). In September, October, and November, everything suddenly clicked and I started to enjoy solving Math problems (flashback to post). In December, I wrote the GMAT (flashback to post). In January and February, I slaved away with applications. Yesterday, I got accepted into the MBA program of the Schulich School of Business and here we are. I am so happy. Thank you yet again to my awesome and unfailing God.

Part time school and full time work commences in May 2013. I have no idea what to do with my Etsy shop. I’m considering letting my little sister run it for a while. Nonetheless, workhorse mode: ON. Here comes the next long road – this isn’t going to be easy but I think I can, I think I can, I know I can! The best part – it’ll all be documented on this blog because this blog is going to be the journal of my life until I am no more (beginning 2009).

Haven’t posted self portraits in a while, so I went out shooting with my girlfriend this afternoon. A beautiful day always calls for a photo date.

I’m going to go all marketing on you tonight. With endearing photos of my amazing dog, Edward.

I’m jumping all over the Zero Moment of Truth bandwagon, although I’m just over a year behind. If you’re behind, too, now’s your chance to catch up. I was at Google’s Engage Connect event yesterday and am reminded of why I love marketing. A few things in life inspire me. Ingenius marketing is one of them. If you’re a marketer, take a look at Google’s Zero Moment of Truth handbook. In a nutshell, ZMOT is about the changing influencers of purchase decisions. The traditional purchase model, stimulus >> in-store >> at home experience, is a thing of the past. It now goes stimulus >> Zero Moment of Truth >> First Moment of Truth (in-store) >> Second Moment of Truth (at home experience). This illustration is a neat summation of the two models.

The ZMOT handbook sheds light on the 84% of consumers whose purchase decisions are shaped by the ZMOT. The ZMOT is everything that happens online before you and I go to a store to make a purchase, from product searches to reading reviews to comparison shopping to asking for advice from your followers on Twitter to posting a question on Yahoo Answers. These are among the heaviest influencers of purchase decisions today. So, the handbook provides a recipe to win ZMOTs, although I don’t think there is ever a cookie-cutter approach to these things. But awareness of the subject is a good first step.

For inspiration:

Have you seen Google Chrome’s Dear Sophie Lee video ad? If not, watch it here. You may encounter a teardrop. Or two.

Have you seen Google’s Project Glass video ad? If not, watch it here. We could all rock one of those now couldn’t we?

Have you ever heard of the Re-Imagining Coke, “Hilltop” ad? If not, learn about it here. Coca-Cola is the master of warm and fuzzies.

Good night!

Before I rave about this event, I have to point out that these photos were taken with an iPhone 5. I do marketing for Canon cameras and absolutely hate being that person taking photos with a smartphone rather than a proper point and shoot or DSLR camera. That’s a big faux pas. But sometimes, you just have to. For spontaneous documentation and memory keeping’s sake. Today, I am guilty as charged. Consequently, the photos went through hefty treatment and polishing before reaching a photo blog-worthy state and that is the sole reason why smartphones are just not good enough. My iPhone battery actually died halfway through the event before I had a chance to snap a few photos, so I asked around for an iPhone charger, because surely, I thought, someone must have one somewhere. But no such luck, so I resorted to borrowing someone else’s iPhone to take these photos and then emailed them to myself. That, my friends, is for the love of photography.

I attended Experience Schulich 2013 today to get a taste of the Schulich School of Business. Let’s just say that I had a hair appointment at 2:30pm this afternoon (scheduled from a while back before registering for this event) and ended up cancelling as soon as I arrived at the event when I quickly realized that there was no way I was going to miss any part of it. Needless to say, York put together a fantastic and extremely alluring event, so big kudos to the team. York, by far, has the warmest, most welcoming and helpful faculty members who leave you feeling quite good and connected to the institution. The entire team does a phenomenal job representing the school – top tier style. People and culture make all the difference and they’ll have you at hello. The 6-hour event was jam packed with information and consisted of networking opportunities, mini lectures delivered by stellar professors, campus tours, Q&A sessions, one-on-ones with faculty members, and a snazzy jazz reception at the end.

Three golden nuggets, among many, that struck a chord with me today:

Dean Dezsö J. Horváth on PEOPLE:
“…Hire people who are better than you, not those who are inferior to you.”

Professor Markus Giesler on INNOVATION:
“…Innovation is not made in the lab. They are created in society and are sustained through the stories we share. Innovation is about creating a society where people see your product the same way you do and the way you want them to.”

Professor Ingo Holzinger on LEADERSHIP / TURBULENCE:
“…Turbulence or ‘Black Swan’ events should be seen by organizations as an opportunity for difference.”

Learning is so exciting; being surrounded by bright and aspiring people is inspiring; new information is stimulating. An active mind is key, so never stop learning. I can’t wait to begin this chapter. Excellent event. I am forever an advocate of education.

It comes down to trying to expose yourself to the best things that humans have done and then try to bring those things in to what you’re doing. I mean, Picasso had a saying, he said, ‘Good artists copy, great artists steal.’ And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas. And I think part of what made the Macintosh great was that the people working on it were musicians and poets and artists and zoologists and historians, who also happened to be the best computer scientists in the world.” –Steve Jobs

I love Mountain Sound. I enjoy the Hipster subculture although a lot of people dislike it. Like this guy.

My best friend is a sweet cook and baker. Check out her newly launched foodie blog at LaseBakes.com. You’ll be salivating by the end of it.

After adding the archives section the other day, I was in an html / php headspace so I kept going and built a nice footer at the bottom of this blog. Scroll all the way down to see. :)

Another burly cow photo. There were so many great shots of them looking right at the camera, they all had to be posted. I did have to make all sorts of funny noises to get them to hold their stare though.

Thank goodness February is over. We’re another month closer to Spring and another month closer to being able to hop on my gorgeous vintage Dutch bicycle for therapeutic bike rides in the sunset.
